In a matter of months, through volumetric modular construction and in-house VDC services, Windover was able to help Tufts University provide temporary isolation housing for students returning to campus during the coronavirus pandemic. Windover led this design-build project and provided important data by combining laser scanning, drone mapping, BIM/MEP coordination, and 4D animations. This information became critical to keeping the project on schedule as it helped streamline the decision making process for the client – including choosing the best site location and best layout of the modular units – and for the approval process by city officials in both Somerville and Medford, where the University has campus locations. The 5 modular units, providing 222 beds, were leased through two different modular manufacturers, and the team used 3D modeling and BIM/MEP coordination to navigate integrating these two different systems together. Overall, the project took just four months from concept to completion.
