Brookwood, an independent pre-K – 8 school, selected Windover as its partner for this fast-track, multiple phased lower school and dining expansion and addition project. The program added 26,000 square feet of new space with an innovative phasing approach that allowed the school to remain in session during all construction phases. The project added nine classrooms, a large atrium “town square” area, renovations to the existing kitchen and servery, and a new 220-seat dining hall.

This project was featured in Education Week.

“As Head of School, I was not only responsible for hiring a firm that would meet our highest standards for construction at the budgeted level, but I also needed to assure our parents that the workers we brought on campus would conduct themselves impeccably. Windover exceeded our expectations at every level.”

– John C. Peterman, former Head of School, Brookwood School

Construction into Curriculum—Working on an Active Campus

The addition was built upon occupied classroom space so a tightly choreographed procession of demolition, new construction, and in-fill construction was implemented by Windover’s team to manage construction without disruption to the school communnity. Because of the monumental efforts of our team, the project concluded three months early with savings returned to the school.

Windover’s team successfully integrated across the entire Brookwood community, from the youngest of its students, to its faculty members, and to its Trustees. By being active listeners and accommodating the community’s needs, Windover instilled trust and was a welcomed presence on campus. All construction logistics were carefully orchestrated to enable the school to operate without distraction or limitation.

With heavy construction occurring just outside occupied classroom windows, we took a decidedly different approach to mitigating its impact. Rather than blocking the site, Windover and Brookwood allowed it to become an interactive learning environment for the students. Construction was incorporated into the curriculum across all grades and students took weekly tours, gave video interviews, and presented reports on its progress throughout the school year. Students even signed the final beam before the building was topped off.
