Formerly home to the McKay School, this century-old building was transformed into a 32-unit apartment complex. The original school building, built in 1907 by the United Shoe Machinery Company, was carefully renovated to marry period charm with modern amenities. A selection of architectural features, such as the building’s brick exterior, beautiful stone main entry, millwork, exposed interior brick, tall ceilings, and staircases were incorporated into the new construction as homage to the building’s history. Extensive analysis of the building’s exterior and existing foundation was performed in order to appropriately reinforce and preserve these structural components for the renovation. The fit-out of 19-units in the existing school building feature updated, energy efficient systems, appliances, and insulation paired with premium finishes. 13 attached, brand new two-story townhomes are connected on the east side of the original building via an open glass vestibule and elevator.
